This year’s Westbrook Community Fund recently awarded grants totalling $35,000 to 25 happy community and not-for-profit groups from in and around Tarneit and Truganina.
Applicants included Tarneit-based not-for-profit Women’s Multicultural Empowerment Network (WMEN) which plans to put its grant towards it’s upcoming Women’s Day event. We spoke to President and Chairperson, Venkat ram Reddy Upparlapalle, about the organisation.
How did you become involved with WMEN?
Over the past decade, I’ve volunteered with various organisations in and around Tarneit and Truganina and saw the pressing need for an organisation focused specifically on empowering women in our community. Together with my friend Nandini Biskunda, we founded WMEN – a not-for-profit organisation aimed at making a difference in the lives of women.
Tell us about WMEN more generally?
WMEN is a community-based organisation dedicated to promoting the empowerment of women from diverse cultural backgrounds within our local community.
What services does WMEN provide?
Our primary mission is to empower and support women from multicultural backgrounds by providing them with the resources, opportunities, and the tools necessary to lead fulfilling and successful lives. We offer a range of services and programs designed to address the unique needs and challenges faced by them including education, mentorship, cultural integration, health and wellness support, community engagement and advocacy.
Tell us about your upcoming Women’s Day event.
It’s going to be a fantastic celebration of women’s achievements and empowerment. Not only will it provide a great platform for raising awareness about gender equality and celebrate diversity, but we also hope it will really inspire people by fostering solidarity, building a support network, and advocating for women’s rights in our community.
How can people become involved?
People can volunteer, attend events and workshops, join one of our projects, donate, spread the word, offer mentorships, collaborate, attend educational sessions, advocate for women’s rights, and join committees. For more information about WMEN and the Women’s Day event, contact: ##
