Doherty's Creek College Community Hub - Community Fund recipient
It’s time to shine the light on another 2022 Westbrook Community Fund grant recipient.
Part of Australia’s National Community Hubs Program, the Doherty’s Creek Community Hub was established in 2019 and is a place where local families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can come to connect with other mums, families and with local services and support.
Community Liaison Officer, Morwenna Petaia, joined the Dohertys Creek College Community Hub last year. Her work encompasses everything from coordinating English classes to playgroups and walking groups to craft and cooking sessions.
We recently spoke to Mowenna about the Community Hub and how it plans to utilise its Westbrook Community Fund grant.
What are the most rewarding things about being involved in Doherty’s Creek College Community Hub?
“To be honest, every single day is rewarding in the Hub. Seeing students try out new foods and dishes at the Breakfast Club, watching parents making new friends at playgroups or proudly showing off their new English-speaking skills at our Coffee and Chat Sessions – all of it is just fantastic and brings me so much joy!”
What are the biggest challenges facing the organisation?
“We’d love to run even more programs, but obtaining ongoing funding is a constant challenge, and limits some of the services we can provide."
How can people become involved, support the Community Hub?
“Volunteers are probably amongst the Hub’s most valuable resources, and we’re always looking for people who are happy to share their skills and contribute back to the community. If anyone is keen to help in a volunteering capacity or they’d like to make a donation check out the Dohertys Creek Community Hub Facebook page or email me at [email protected] for more information.”
